It’s September 2000, the rainy season has started in Seattle. Rain, and more rain. I’ve been here only for a few months, and I start asking myself if it was a wise choice. I am in the mood for Italian food. Preferably some comfort food but not pizza.
That’s when I went for the first time to La Spiga. La Spiga was a small restaurant on Broadway. Lit mostly by candles. Almost always full of people. Behind the open desk you could see Pietro and Sabrina work
ing. Their key dish was Piadina: the special flatbread from the Romagna region of Italy. Piadina, like every simple food, is incredibly hard to make right. Pietro and Sabrina’s is excellent. I quickly became a regular presence at La Spiga. The place used to be full of expats, and open minded Americans.
Today La Spiga is a much bigger place, and it has retained all of its poetry. It is still the only place in Seattle where you can have awesome Sangiovese Superiore while listening to Jazz. It is still the only place in Seattle where you can have the best freshly sliced Prosciutto di Parma. It is still the only place where you can have Gnocco Fritto and Cynar Spritz.
Most of all, it is the only place where you can meet Pietro and Sabrina. Who welcome everyone with a smile and the best food they can prepare. Everyday. And they make you feel at home. Wherever your home is or was. Tiziano.
